FAQs
Why don't I see my full message history?
When you connect WhatsApp to Clay, it's like logging in on a new device. For safety reasons, WhatsApp only lets us see a small portion of your recent messages, not your full chat history. We wish we could show you more, but it's WhatsApp's way of protecting your privacy. For now, connecting WhatsApp lets you import your contacts and interactions in Clay to help you keep track of them.
I have a work and personal WhatsApp account. Can I connect both of them?
We don't currently support connecting multiple WhatsApp accounts simultaneously, but we're actively exploring this feature! In the meantime, here's a workaround to get contacts from both your work and personal WhatsApp accounts into Clay:
- First, disconnect WhatsApp from Clay (if already connected)
- Log in to your personal WhatsApp account on your Mac or Windows
- Open Clay and connect your personal WhatsApp
- Allow your personal contacts to fully sync to Clay
- Once synced, disconnect WhatsApp and select "Keep a Copy" when prompted
- Close Clay completely
- Log out of your personal WhatsApp account
- Log in to your work WhatsApp account
- Reopen Clay and reconnect WhatsApp (this will now connect your work account)
- Wait for your work contacts to sync
⚠️ With this method, only the currently connected WhatsApp account will receive timeline updates. For example, if you leave your work WhatsApp connected, your personal WhatsApp contacts' timelines won't update automatically.
What Clay Does
- Clay imports people you've messaged in WhatsApp. Clay will create cards for people you've texted and exclude text exchanges with non-people (like shortcodes). The more relevant someone is, the more often they'll appear in Clay and the higher they'll be ranked in search, so you shouldn’t need to remove people even if you haven’t talked to them in a while.
- Clay will try to enrich cards when possible. Clay will add people's phone numbers and text moments to existing cards when the names match. If no name is found, just the phone number is shown.
What Clay Doesn’t Do
- Clay won't import any of the content of your messages. This is incredibly important to us. The full details are posted in our comprehensive Security and Privacy policy, but we specifically never read, have access to, nor upload the contents of your messages.
- Clay can't send messages on your behalf. This integration never writes back to your computer, so it won’t affect your WhatsApp at all. We only request permission for the purposes of creating and enriching contacts inside Clay.
